Lahore, July 7 (ANI): Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif has termed the 'unabated killings' in Karachi as the failure of the government, and demanded that the matter be brought before parliament.
In a statement, Nawaz expressed grave shock over the killings and declared it as the Pakistan government's failure.
"The public representatives should be taken into confidence on the issue by taking it up before the parliament," the News quoted Nawaz, as saying.
He argued that the entire nation wanted to know why the security agencies had become ineffective in Karachi.
About 29 people have been killed in the recent spate of bloodshed in Karachi. The attack on Awami National Party (ANP), having support of a large segment of the city's Pakhtun population, triggered violence in Orangi town, which soon spread to Karachi and adjoining areas.
According to a report issued by the Karachi chapter of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), a total of 1,138 people were killed in the city during the first six months of 2011, with 490 of them falling prey to targeted killings on political, sectarian and ethnic grounds.
According to the report, 150 of the 490 targeted killing victims were apparently killed over their association with various political, religious and nationalist parties, 56 for their ethnic background and eight on sectarian grounds. (ANI)
