'Corrupt' local WHO officials behind 'mysterious' fire at Islamabad godown?

Islamabad , Sat, 02 Jul 2011 ANI

Islamabad, July 2(ANI): Some 'corrupt' World Health Organisation (WHO) officials may be involved in the fire incident at the organisation's godown in Islamabad, according to a Pakistani newspaper.

Heavy fire had erupted in a WHO godown in sector I-9/3 of Islamabad on Friday morning, engulfing the whole building of the warehouse.

A WHO official said on the condition of anonymity that some senior WHO officials had committed serious financial embezzlements amounting in millions of rupees in KPK's health projects and an internal inquiry had found them guilty.

"The real story is that the inquiry record of three high officials of WHO was in the office of the godown. The three officials were found involved in the misappropriation in a vaccination project of KPK and their dismissal was recommended," The Nation quoted the official, as saying.

All the record related to these embezzlements was present at the warehouse that was set on fire reportedly by these officials, who tried to remove the evidence of their malpractices, the official added.

An eyewitness said that when the fire erupted, all the staff came out of the godown, and nobody even bothered to extinguish the fire.

He said that rescue teams comprising paramedics and fire brigade reached the spot, but the in-charge of the godown- Colonel (retired) Naeem of WHO- allegedly did not allow them to enter inside the premises. Islamabad Police Officials also reached the site after the lapse of half an hour, he added.

A senior police official said that the reason behind this fire cannot be ascertained so far, but assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted in this regard. (ANI)
