Melbourne, July 2(ANI): Australian air safety regulator, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), has suspended all Tiger Airways Australia flights, saying that it has lost confidence in the Melbourne-based ultra-low cost airline's ability to manage its safety.
CASA spokesman Peter Gibson said that it was a serious step and not one that the regulator took lightly.
"From our perspective, we've got to concentrate on safety. Our job is to make sure that the highest safety standards we have in Australia are met by all airlines," The Herald Sun quoted Gibson, as saying.
"In this case, the risk got to a stage where we believed there was a serious and immediate risk to safety, that's why they're on the ground," he added.
It is the first time that CASA has grounded an entire airline, and Gibson said that the regulator rarely put airlines on the ground, even smaller operators.
"The last thing CASA wants to do is put airlines on the ground and inconvenience the travelling public, but safety has to come first," Gibson said.
Tiger Airways Australia is a subsidiary of Tiger Airways Holdings, a Singapore-based company, which is owned partially by Singapore Airlines.
The airline is based in Melbourne, with its main base at Melbourne Airport. (ANI)
