London, July 1(ANI): People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the world's largest animal rights organisation, has asked the Pakistan Government for permission to paint Osama bin Laden's lair in Abbottabad with 'peace messages'.
The then Al Qaeda chief, who had evaded capture for a decade, was killed in a top-secret US unilateral military operation in Pakistan's Abbottabad city on May 2.
"Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was synonymous with terrorism while he was alive, but PETA U.K. has put forward a proposal to the government of Pakistan to make the 9/11 mastermind's compound a symbol of peace and respect for all, including other species," the organisation said in a statement.
"PETA U.K. has written to Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari asking if the group can paint the walls outside the compound with the message that peace can begin on your plate," it added.
PETA wants to paint the walls of bin Laden's lair with slogans: "Give Peas a Chance - Go Vegan" and "Nonviolence begins on your plate."
If permitted, the artwork will also feature images of peas arranged to represent different religious symbols, including the Christian cross, the Muslim star and crescent, the Hindu Om, and the Jewish Star of David.
"It is possible that the compound may ultimately be destroyed once investigations at the site are complete in order to prevent it from becoming a shrine, but meanwhile, how fantastic would it be to allow it to serve as reminder that each of us can make choices every day that help to end violence when we sit down at the table or pick up a snack from a street vendor or drive-through window?" the statement questioned.
