Hindu statesman Zed asks Brent Council in England not to axe Navaratri funding

Nevada (US) , Sat, 04 Jun 2011 ANI

Nevada (US), June 1 (ANI): Esteemed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed has urged Brent Council in England to not axe the Navaratri festival funding.

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, in a release in Nevada (USA) today, said that Navaratri was a major and auspicious Hindu festival. It was important for Hindu families to pass on Hindu spirituality,

concepts and traditions to coming generations. It was already a tough task amidst so many distractions in the consumerist society and discontinuing funding to a rich festival like Navaratri would make it even tougher.

Rajan Zed argued that besides bringing cohesiveness in the community, continuing the reported 30-years old tradition of Navaratri in the borough would also be a good marketing tool for the borough.

Borough's Hindu community is reportedly highly concerned about it and is protesting against this proposal.

During popular autumn festival of Navaratri (nine nights), nine forms of Devi (Divine Mother) are worshipped and it represents celebration of Goddess Durga. It involves fasting, dances, prayers, worship, etc., and is a period of introspection and purification.

Ann John is the Brent Council Leader; Aslam Choudry is the Mayor while Gareth Daniel is the Chief Executive. Over 18% population is of Indian descent in London borough of Brent in North-West London, which forms part of Outer London. With Wembley as the administrative headquarter, it is the home of Wembley Stadium and Neasden Swaminarayan Mandir and river Brent runs through it. Brent has won the country's Street Dance Award.

Hinduism is the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal. (ANI)
