ZA Bhutto case being reopened to rectify a historic wrong: Gilan

Islamabad, Mon, 04 Apr 2011 ANI

Islamabad, Apr 4(ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has said that the reopening of the Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto case was aimed at rectifying a historical wrong.

"The decision to re-open the case was taken by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairperson, Asif Ali Zardari, myself, the federal cabinet and the National Assembly," the Daily Times quoted Gilani, as saying.

He highlighted that the judges who pronounced Bhutto's execution had later admitted that they did so under intense pressure from military dictator General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.

Bhutto, who was the founder of the PPP, had served as the fourth Pakistan President from 1971 to 1973 and as the ninth Prime Minister from 1973 to 1977.

He was executed in 1979 after the Pakistan Supreme Court sentenced him to death for authorizing the murder of a political opponent.

The execution has been widely termed as a 'judicial murder'.

Earlier, Zardari had signed the reference seeking to reopen the case.

The reference was signed in the presence of Law Minister Babar Awan and Sindh Home Minister Zulfikar Mirza, and was sent to the Supreme Court by the Law Ministry. (ANI)
