Zardari omits critical US drone attack issue from presidential address

Islamabad , Wed, 23 Mar 2011 ANI

Islamabad, Mar 23(ANI): Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari touched all issues relating to governance, economic and foreign policies during his address to the joint sitting of parliament, but did not mention drone attacks at all during his 23-minute speech.

About Pakistan's foreign policy, Zardari said it was aimed at advancing national security, promoting peace and economic agenda while safeguarding national dignity, sovereignty and independence.

"We seek trade, not aid. We have revived trans-regional energy projects," The News quoted the president, as saying.

Speaking about Pakistan's relationship with India, Zardari said that a full spectrum dialogue process had been resumed with New Delhi.

About the Kashmir issue, he said that Pakistan sought a just settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the UN resolutions, while respecting the aspirations of the people of Kashmir.

Strongly reacting to the acts of terrorism in the country, Zardari vowed that the country would fight militants to the finish, and also expressed the resolve for a modern and moderate Pakistan - as per the vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

"We cannot permit the use of our soil for terrorist activities against any other country. We will not," he said.

He, however, warned that the fight against militancy might be long and bitter. "We will not back down. We have no other option except to win. And soon we will win Insha Allah," he added.

Zardari also vowed that the government would uphold the supremacy of the Constitution and parliament.

"We will not permit anyone to usurp the powers that rightly belong to parliament," he said, adding, "We believe that all state organs should work within their parameters as laid down in the constitution. The restoration of the constitution shows that if we rise above politicking, we can deliver". (ANI)
