Kuala Lumpur, Mar 22 (ANI): Malaysia's Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has said that police are probing the possibility of the country being a transit point for weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
"It is safe for me to say that Malaysia is likely being used as a transit point and not as a destination point for WMD," Hishammuddin said.
The Home Minister was commenting on the recent police seizure of equipment that could be used to make WMD, including nuclear warheads, in Port Klang.
"It will take us some time to identify the equipment, what it can be used for and to trace the source of the equipment," The Star quoted Hishammuddin, as saying.
"We are also examining whether the items can be used in the context of making WMD and have enlisted the help of government agencies and foreign experts to examine the equipment," he said.
Hishammuddin said if it was proven that the equipment was intended to be used or made into WMD, it would be a serious matter.
When pressed further, he said the seizure was not the first in the country.
Hishammuddin said cooperation and information sharing was fundamental today, particularly with events unfolding in Libya and other Middle East countries.
"This situation (in the Middle East) will come at a cost, including the possible movement of people, extremists and ideologies which may affect Malaysia," he said. (ANI)
