Lahore, Mar 21(ANI): Double murder-accused CIA contractor Raymond Davis was released by a Pakistani court after the heirs of the two victims pardoned him in return for blood-money worth 200 million rupees, which was in accordance with the Shariah laws, Punjab Governor Sardar Latif Khosa has said.
On March 16- the same day when Davis was indicted for double murder- he was freed and quickly flown out of Pakistan after the heirs of the two victims told a local court that they had accepted compensation, bringing the one and a half month-long saga to an abrupt end.
Talking to media persons at a marriage ceremony in Lahore, Khosa said the court had quizzed all 19 members of the families before taking the decision and their affidavits were presented in the court, The News reports.
Khosa said that Islam appreciates forgiveness by taking blood money or without it, and that the law of Qisas and Diyat was included in the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) on the order of the Supreme Court.
The law of Qisas and Diyat is helpful in maintaining peace and brotherhood in society, he said, adding that courts were never as free as they are now, so those who did not like the decision of the court could go to higher courts.
Responding to a question, the governor said the blood money might have been paid by the family of Davis, if the US government did not pay it.
Answering another question, Khosa said that no one could pressurise the 19 people without their willingness, adding that the court had mentioned in its detailed judgment that there was no single evidence that proved otherwise. (ANI)
