Bible translated in Malaysian language no affront to Muslims: Ulema

Kuala Lumpur, Sat, 19 Mar 2011 ANI

Kuala Lumpur, Mar. 19 (ANI): The translation of Bible in the traditional Malaysian language is of no affront to Muslims and is perfectly fine in the eyes of Federal Constitution, according to religious advisor Fathul Bari Mat Jahya.

"Arabic is the original language used in the Al-Quran. But Prophet Muhammad had never stopped or forbade others in using Arabic to spread their own religions," Fathul said, adding that people should keep in mind that language does not represent religion.

Fathul, who is the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the United Malays National Organisation Youth General Ulema, said it was also perfectly acceptable for Christians to use the word "Allah".

However, he said that it could be used only in a Christian context and not to mislead Muslims.

Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) ulema council chief Harun Taib said Christians should not be denied the right to use the Bible in Bahasa Malaysia, as it was the country's national language.

"Will the faith of Muslims be affected by a translation of the Bible? No, it is just a Bible read by Christians, that is all. Why must there be any opposition?" The Star quoted him, as saying.

Harun also said Christians could use the word "Allah" as long as it was within the confines of their religion and if they are convinced that "Allah' is their God.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) information chief Dr Muhammad Nur Manuty said Muslims should not worry about the usage of the word "Allah" and the Bahasa Malaysia Bible.

"This is the right of religion and Bahasa Malaysia is the official language of the country so we cannot restrict other religions, including Christians from using it," he said.

Malaysian Ulama Association president Sheikh Abdul Halim Abdul Kadir earlier said that the Quran had been translated into many languages and every individual has right to read it in the language of their choice.owever, he also said that "Allah" should be exclusive for Muslims. (ANI)
