Islamabad, Mar 16(ANI): The US government has reportedly decided to defend its claim in a Pakistan trial court that double murder-accused CIA defence contractor Raymond Davis enjoys criminal diplomatic immunity.
"Raymond Davis will have his legal counsel with him when the trial court resumes its proceedings," The Nation quoted a US Embassy spokesperson, as saying.
The spokesperson, however, declined to give telephonic contacts and other details of Davis' counsel, saying that he was not authorised to do so.
Meanwhile, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry kept mum in the wake of the Lahore High Court verdict relating to the Davis case, saying that the case was still sub judice.
Nevertheless, background discussions and interviews with legal experts of repute having deep knowledge of the Vienna Conventions, international law and practices and law of the land suggested that there was no option left with the United States other than resorting to the legal course.
Sources pointed out that Pakistan's judiciary is sovereign today, and neither the political government nor the military establishment can influence it.
They viewed the disposal of four petitions relating to Davis entirely in line with the just legal process and in the interest of the justice.
The LHC, while disposing of the four writ petitions mainly filed to debar grant of immunity to Davis and his travel outside the jurisdiction of this court, had shifted the whole issue to the trial court for decision.
The trial court will indict Davis on Wednesday (today) on the charges of killing two Pakistani men in Lahore on December 27.
Experts say that the regular trial of Davis would commence after he would be formally charge-sheeted for the alleged offence, which is likely to be done on Wednesday. (ANI)
