Melbourne, Mar 13 (ANI): The Australian teenager charged with the murder of an Indian student last week has been formally refused bail in court this morning.
Daniel Stani-Reginald appeared via videolink in Parramatta Bail Court charged with the rape and murder of 24-year-old student Tosha Thakkar, whose body was discovered in a suitcase in canel at Meadowbank Park, a suburb of Sydney, last Friday.
Documents before the court allege Stani-Reginald, a 19-year-old from Croydon, raped and killed Thakkar two days earlier, the Daily Telegraph reports.
He spent much of his brief court appearance with his face slumped in his hands, as dozens of Thakker's grieving friends packed the courtroom.
Relative Anish Popli said family back in India is struggling to come to terms with Thakkar's brutal death.
"They are still in a state of shock. We talk to them and try and communicate and we [are] just talking to them and try to help them out," he said.
Popli said Thakkar was a lovely, innocent person who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"She was studying at uni, in the city at Southern Cross. And she'd been here a while - she'd been in Australia three-and-a-half, four years. She knew the place, she knew her way around," he added.
He didn't apply for bail and Magistrate John McIntosh formally refused it.
The case will be mentioned at Burwood Local Court tomorrow. (ANI)
