London, Mar. 8 (ANI): The BBC Hindi radio service gets a temporary reprieve after a high-profile campaign opposing plans to end transmissions by the end of March 2011.
The BBC world service said that they were approached by a number of commercial parties about alternative funding.
The supporters of the campaign included writers such as Arundhati Roy, Vikram Seth and broadcaster Sir Mark Tully.
The BBC has agreed to keep one hour evening broadcast in Hindi for another year.
The BBC quoted the campaigners as saying that Hindi broadcasts have nearly 10 million listeners, with most of them in rural areas.
For nearly seven decades BBC Hindi radio has been serving as credible source of information, but last month BBC announced that it would cut foreign language output on the World Service network due to reduced government funding. (ANI)
