US concerned for Aung San Suu Kyi's safety after state media's "tragic end" threat

Washington , Thu, 17 Feb 2011 ANI

Washington, Feb 17(ANI): The Obama administration is concerned about the safety of Burmese opposition politician Aung San Suu Kyi after what it called a "veiled threat" against her in a state-run newspaper article.

U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said that the article suggested that if Suu Kyi proceeds with plans to reconstitute her National League for Democracy party "she could be in some danger".

According to the Telegraph, the newspaper commentary had warned that Suu Kyi and her party will meet "tragic ends" if they move against recent political reforms. It also criticized her for failing to end her support of international sanctions against Burma.

Crowley said that the commentary was of "great concern" as it was published in a state-run newspaper, "so one would assume there's actually something behind this".If you look at history, there have been times where she has been released and then they've found a way to bring her again under house arrest. We hope that with her release she's able to do what she wants to do, which is reconstitute her political party as part of the process of opening up civil society within Burma," Crowley said.

The 65-year-old remained under house arrest in Burma for almost 15 of the 21 years from July 20, 1989 until her release on November 13, 2010. (ANI)
