Brazil deploys National Force for World Cup workshop security

Brazil,Sports, Fri, 14 Feb 2014 IANS

Rio de Janeiro, Feb 14 (IANS) Brazil's National Force will be deployed during next week's FIFA World Cup Team Workshop in the southern city of Florianopolis in a bid to avert the threat of violence.

The Feb 18-20 event will attract coaches and officials from each of the 32 teams that have qualified for this year's World Cup, reports Xinhua.

According to Brazil's federal gazette Diario Oficial da Uniao, National Force soldiers will "control riots and civil disturbance" and provide a "security escort for FIFA executive committee with a view to preserving public order and safety of participants."

The announcement comes at the back of violent anti-government protests that began during last year's FIFA Confederations Cup, a World Cup warm-up tournament.

Last week Brazilian television cameraman Santiago Andrade died after being struck by a flare during clashes between protesters and police in Rio de Janeiro.

The FIFA World Cup Team Workshop will outline tournament details including information related to the country, time tables, key dates, logistics and marketing.

The World Cup will be held in 12 Brazilian cities from June 12 to July 13.
