Fans keep silent vigil on Schumacher's 45h birthday

Grenoble (France), Jan 3 (IANS) Michael Schumacher fans kept a silent vigil on the Formula 1 maestro's 45th birthday outside the Grenoble University Hospital here Friday.

Several Ferrari clubs from France and Italy gathered outside the hospital to show their support for the former seven-time world champion. who is in a medically induced coma after a skiing accident Sunday in the resort town of Meribel in the French Alps, according to media reports.

Schumacher's family Thursday thanked his fans for their support through a statement, describing the German as a "fighter". The most successful Formula 1 driver is currently in a stable but critical condition.

The fans came dressed in red, the colour of Ferrari's famous racing cars. Schumacher had won an unprecedented five titles for the 'Prancing Horse'.

Fans waved flags, sang happy birthday and also brought greeting cards for the 45-year-old who had raced for Jordan, Benetton, Ferrari and Mercedes.

Some supporters also held a minute's silence for the German champion who injured himself while skiing off-piste when he fell and hit his head. His helmet cracked on impact after hitting a rock.
