Kenyan president tells soccer officials to improve standards

Kenya,Sports, Mon, 16 Dec 2013 IANS

Nairobi, Dec 16 (IANS) Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta has called on football administrators to improve the standards of the game in the country.

Kenyatta also challenged football administrators to re-examine the root cause of past poor performance in football and told them to be transparent in management of football, reports Xinhua.

"Players cannot be blamed as they have what it takes, capacity and talent to excel. We should ask ourselves where we went wrong," he said Sunday.

The 'Harambee Stars' are the new Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) Senior Challenge Cup Champions.

The national team, led by Belgian coach Adel Amrouche, beat Sudan 2-0 in the final CECAFA match played in Nairobi last Thursday to lift the trophy.

Two goals from skipper Allan Wanga in the 34th and 68th minutes gave Kenya the trophy they last won in 2002. President Kenyatta said Kenyans were disappointed with past performances of the national team.

He assured that the government will work with other stakeholders to bring changes in the management of football.

Kenyatta congratulated the team for the win that had reclaimed the country's lost glory in football.
