Brazilian police probe World Cup stadium fire

Brazil,Sports, Sat, 26 Oct 2013 IANS

Rio de Janeiro, Oct 26 (IANS) Police in Brazil are investigating the cause of a stadium fire that briefly caused panic among World Cup officials in the western city of Cuiaba.

Authorities Friday said the flames were quickly brought under control at the Arena Pantanal stadium, one of 12 venues to host football's showpiece event next year, reports Xinhua.

No injuries were reported and officials said there was no damage caused.

"We controlled the fire and nothing was affected," local fire brigade chief Alessandro Borges said.

"Investigators will look into the cause of the fire. The only flammable material around was polystyrene and the flames were contained to the basement."

The incident occurred just a day after officials admitted Arena Pantanal would miss the Dec 31 deadline set by FIFA for the completion of World Cup stadiums.

According to Mato Grosso state governor Silval Barbosa, the 43,000-seat venue is on target to be ready in mid-January.

The stadium is scheduled to host four matches during the June 12 to July 13 tournament.
