Ayatollah Khamenei hints at disapproval over Rouhani-Obama telecon during UN meet

Washington , Sun, 06 Oct 2013 ANI

Washington, Oct. 6 (ANI): Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has hinted that he disapproved of the phone call between Presidents Hassan Rouhani and Barack Obama during the United Nations General Assembly meet at New York.

Khamenei however reiterated that he supported Rouhani's policy of outreach to the West.

Khamenei's comments came after hard-liners criticized the 15-minute phone conversation between Rouhani and Obama, a gesture aimed at ending three decades of rift between the two countries.

According to Fox News, hard-liners, including commanders in the powerful Revolutionary Guard, have said that Rouhani went too far in reaching out to the U.S.

Khamenei also said the U.S. was untrustworthy. He has previously said he's not opposed to direct talks with the U.S. to resolve Iran's nuclear standoff with the West but is not optimistic, the report added. (ANI)
