Malala urges world leaders to raise funds to educate Syrian refugees

Islamabad , Tue, 24 Sep 2013 ANI

Islamabad, Sept. 24 (ANI): Pakistani student and child activist Malala Yousafzai has urged world leaders to come up with 175 million dollars to educate 400,000 Syrian children who fled to neighboring Lebanon to escape a civil war in their homeland.

The United Nations education envoy Gordon Brown received 1 million dollar from Avaaz campaign group as an initial amount to start sending Syrian refugees to school, Dawn reports.

UN children's agency UNICEF said 257,000 Syrian children were seeking education in Lebanon in 2013 and that was set to rise to 400,000 next year.

Yousafzai, who was shot in the head by the Taliban last year for demanding education for girls, said she could understand the situation of Syrian children because the same happened to children in her country.

According to the report, former British Prime Minister Brown announced a plan by the Overseas Development Institute to educate those 400,000 Syrian children by employing Syrian refugees who were teachers, opening Lebanese schools to teach children and providing school meals.

Western Union also announced that it will match consumer donations to its newly created education fund up to 100,000 dollars. (ANI)
