Dubai, Sept. 20 (ANI): Saudi Arabia's religious police have been warned not to interpret cases or commit offenses related to the prosecution of women on charges of driving cars.
The members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (CPVPV) have been told that arrest of women driving cars is within the powers and jurisdiction of the security authorities and while CPVPV applies the rules of the state, it cannot go beyond them, Gulf News reports.
The Saudi police warned the Commission of legal accountability, if they fail to comply with the directives.
Women are banned from driving cars in the Saudi kingdom as a social restriction, but there is no law that supports the ban.
Women caught driving are often asked to sign a pledge, not to repeat their action. (ANI)
