China unveils world's highest civilian airport in Sichuan

Wellington, Tue, 17 Sep 2013 ANI

Wellington, Sept. 17 (ANI): China opened the world's highest airport in Garzi, Sichuan, which is expected to reduce travel time from the provincial capital from two days to a little more than one hour.

The Daocheng airport, located in a heavily ethnic Tibetan part of Sichuan, is 14,472 feet above sea level, becoming the world's highest airport.

According to stuff.co.nz, the flights would initially connect with Chengdu, the provincial capital and flights to cities including Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing will begin at a later date.

The 315 million dollars airport has been designed to handle 2,80,000 passengers a year, and will help open up the nearby Yading Nature Reserve to tourism.

The report said that Garzi has been the scene of numerous self-immolation protests against Chinese rule in the last three years and remains under tight security. (ANI)
