Islamabad, Sept. 8 (ANI): The Nawaz government in Punjab has decided to carry out a microscopic check of nearly 10,000 madrassas operating in the province.
The move comes after having hands-on information about and exposure to the extent of terrorism in the province that is inflicting the country.
According to the Daily Times, data that is available with the Punjab government reveal there are at least 500 madrassas that need close inspection to end the element of extremism being preached there through religious teaching.
The report said that there are approximately 36 seminaries that follow a hardliner Islamist approach and are prone to produce Islamic militancy.
In his previous tenure, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was accused of going soft on the terrorists operating from Punjab.
He had even been quoted saying to the Punjabi Taliban that his government shared the vision of these forces.
The comment came at a time when there were groups based in Punjab committing sectarian violence across the country, the main being Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), which was killing the Hazara Shias in Quetta, the report said.
According to the report, but now, being in power in the Centre and in Punjab, the PML-N is bound to take a different approach to counter terrorism, which includes the terrorists' 'safe havens' in Punjab.
It is the responsibility of the PML-N to resolve issues countrywide and not just in one province, and it is welcome that instead of taking terrorism as a problem of the 'other', it is treating it as a common problem cutting across provincial boundaries, the report added. (ANI)
