Cairo, Thu, 05 Sep 2013 ANI

Cairo, Sept. 5 (ANI): Egyptian Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim on Thursday survived an assassination attempt when a bomb exploded near his convoy, but seven other people were injured, according to security and medic sources.

The blast occurred near the minister's passing convoy in Nasr City in eastern Cairo in the morning as the minister was on his way from home to the Interior Ministry headquarters in downtown Cairo, state-run MENA news agency reported, quoting a security source.

Mohamed Sultan, head of Egypt's Ambulance Authority, told Xinhua seven people were injured in the blast.

State-run Nile TV, meanwhile, reported that a bomb had been thrown from a building, Xinhua reports.

All the streets were totally closed in the area and the traffic on Mosutafa el-Nahas street, where the explosion took place, was totally crippled. Some nearby shops were totally damaged.

A mosque in Nasr City was the venue of a major sit-in organized by supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi which was dispersed by the security forces last month. (ANI)
