Gulf countries prepare emergency plan for nuclear leaks

Dubai , Tue, 27 Aug 2013 ANI

Dubai, Aug. 27 (ANI): The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has prepared an emergency plan to be rolled out to tackle nuclear leaks in the Gulf or elsewhere, after Fukushima nuclear plant leaks raised an alarm-like situation.

The Gulf News reported that the GCC countries will hold a meeting in Vienna in the coming week to discuss the emergency plan, in case there were dangerous radiation levels from the present leaks at the nuclear plant.

Mohammad Mubarak Bin Daina, vice chief executive of the Supreme Council for Environment in Bahrain, said that GCC countries were keen on the physical well-being of their citizens.

The emergency plan will be implemented in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the report added.

GCC officials had earlier said that the IAEA should send international inspectors to Iran's Bushehr nuclear plant, after an earthquake struck the area and prompted grave concerns to the Gulf region over possible radiation leaks.

The GCC countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, have regularly called for a close monitoring of the nuclear situation in Iran and neighboring countries. (ANI)
