'Deeply concerned' U.S. calls for UN investigation into alleged Syrian chemical weapons attacks

Washington, Thu, 22 Aug 2013 ANI

Washington, Aug. 22 (ANI): The United States is 'deeply concerned' by reports that Syrian government forces killed hundreds of civilians in a chemical weapons attack.

The White House said that the Obama administration is also calling on the United Nations to urgently investigate the gassed attack that killed hundreds of Syrian civilians.

Principal deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said that the United States strongly condemned the use of chemical weapons, adding that those responsible for the use of those weapons must be held accountable.

According to Politico, the main Syrian opposition group said that more than 1,000 people were killed in attacks on Wednesday.

Earnest said that if the Syrian government had nothing to hide and was truly committed to an impartial and credible investigation of chemical weapons use in Syria, it would facilitate the UN team's immediate and unfettered access to this site.

He added the United States urged all Syrian parties, including the government and opposition, to provide immediate access to any and all sites of importance to the investigation and to ensure security for the UN investigative team, the report added. (ANI)
