Islamabad, Aug 15 (IANS) The resignation of Pakistani chief election commissioner Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim, tendered to President Asif Ali Zardari July 31, has been accepted, Geo News reported Thursday.
Ebrahim, one of the country's most respected jurists, stepped down a week after the Supreme Court ordered the commission to advance presidential polls from its originally scheduled Aug 6 to July 30.
He oversaw the May 11, 2013 general elections in Pakistan but had to quit after harsh criticism from the opposition parties for what they said was his failure to stop rigging in the polls.
The resignation was accepted earlier this week (Aug 12), Geo News said.
In his resignation letter to the president, Ebrahim had written: "I was appointed through a consultative process by the last Parliament. My constitutional term ends in 2017. However, in my humble opinion, the newly-elected members of Parliament should have the opportunity to forge new consensus and choose a new Chief Election Commissioner."
The government would write to Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry for the appointment of an acting Chief Election Commissioner.
