Whitmore may coach Jamaican U-23 squad

United Kingdom,Sports, Mon, 22 Jul 2013 IANS

Kingston (Jamaica), July 22 (IANS/CMC) There could be a coaching role for Theodore Whitmore, the former head coach of Jamaica's football team, according to Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) president Horace Burrell.

"Tappa (Whitmore) still has a role to play. He's a developing coach who is committed to the country's football, and who I believe has a bright future," Burrell told the Jamaica Observer, reports CMC.

Speaking at a function Sunday to unveil the new head coach and Whitmore's successor, Winfried Schaffer of Germany, Burrell said that there are plans to appoint Whitmore as the head coach of the Under-23 squad.

"We plan to put him in charge of this crucial development team. As part of his continued development, we will also be sending him on some courses," Burrell disclosed.

"It's unfortunate how things turned out for Whitmore and the senior team, but there's no animosity either way. There is a mutual respect and understanding that this is football at this level. He remains an asset that we intend to continue to invest in," said Burrell.

Whitmore had resigned as head coach of the 'Reggae Boyz' after only two points from six games in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying tournament.
