US says Egypt may have dodged potential civil war by ousting Morsi

Washington, Fri, 19 Jul 2013 ANI

Washington, July 19 (ANI): The US Secretary of State has reportedly suggested that Egypt may have dodged a potential civil war by ousting President Mohammed Morsi.

According to the Washington Times, John Kerry said that the White House has conveyed to Cairo its 'very deep concern' about the military ouster of Morsi and subsequent suspension of the country's Constitution but did not call the expulsion a military coup as doing so would require the halt of 1.5 billion dollars in US aid.

Kerry said that he will not 'rush to judgement' and would wait for the lawyers to do their homework and added that there was an extraordinary situation in Egypt of the potential of civil war and enormous violence and now there is a constitutional process proceeding forward very rapidly.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh in Jordan also refrained from calling Morsi ousting as a coup.

Judeh said that the military intervention was aimed at putting 'the constitutional process back on tract and added that the military in Egypt has been the guarantor of peace and stability in many twists and turns in Egypt's contemporary history, the report added. (ANI)
