Oz couple convicted for racially ripping off Sikh driver's turban in Sydney

Sydney , Wed, 17 Jul 2013 ANI

Sydney, July 17 (ANI): A couple has been jailed for nine months for a racially motivated attack on a Sikh driver in Darwin, Sydney.

The couple ripped off Jagroop Singh's turban in the 'unprovoked' and 'malicious' attack.

According to news.com.au, in sentencing the couple, Justice Stephen Southwood said that the turban is the crowning glory of the Sikhs.

He added that for Sikhs, the head and the turban are sacred - they must not be touched or insulted in any way.

Angeline Kim Sollitt, 44, and Michael John Arbouin, 40, started racially abusing Singh after he picked her and four other people up from the Dinah Beach Yacht Club, in Tipperary Waters, in October last year.

She told Singh to take of that 'sh** off' his head if wanted to live Australia and it was not his country.

According to the report, Singh kept driving but pulled over on Tiger Brennan Drive to kick them out of his cab when the abuse did not stop.

Sollitt got out and yelled, 'grab his turban, rip it off', before she ran to Singh and tried to remove it.

She eventually ripped it from his head, leaving his hair dishevelled.

The court heard that Singh was so ashamed following the attack that he cut his young son's hair and told him not to wear a turban, the report added. (ANI)
