Sydney, July 8 (ANI): The Muslim Brotherhood has said Egyptian security forces shot dead 16 Islamist activists during a protest in Cairo calling for ousted president Mohamed Morsi to be reinstated.
Muslim Brotherhood's spokesman Ahmed Aref said that 16 people were killed and hundred others were injured, who are in a serious condition.
According to the Herald Sun, police barricades prevented journalists from accessing the area around the elite Republican Guards base.
Demonstrators said troops and police had fired tear gas canisters and bullets into the air to disperse the protesters.
Supporters of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood have mobilised in large numbers in different parts of Cairo in recent days.
They have vowed to defend Morsi, who was ousted by the military on Wednesday after mass protests calling for him to be removed from power, the report added. (ANI)
