Beijing, June 1 (Xinhua-ANI): New chief minister of Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakthunkhwa province Pervez Khan Khattak Friday urged the leader of Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) Nawaz Sharif to form a decisive policy to stop U.S. drone strikes in the country's tribal regions.
"We call upon the federal government and Nawaz Sharif to chalk out a clear policy against U.S. drones and terrorism and for peace, "said Pervez Khan Khattak, central general secretary of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) party, after he was elected as the chief minister.
PTI emerged the largest party in the Khyber Pakthunkhwa Assembly. The party has formed government in the province for the first time.
During the campaign for the May 11 polls, PTI chairman Imran Khan had announced that the party's policy is to shoot down U.S. drones if it was voted to power at the centre.
Meanwhile, PTI spokesperson Dr Shirin Mazari lashed out at the U.S. for carrying out the recent drone strike when Pakistan is in the process of new government formation.
She told the media that PTI will move a resolution in the National Assembly against the drone attacks.
She said that the resolution will strongly urge the U.S. to stop the attacks and the government will also be advised to take action if the U.S. refuse to halt the operation.
Mazari said that her party's government in Khyber Pakthunkhwa has the right to search NATO supplies in case of suspicion of presence of arms in the trucks.
On the other hand, a senior leader of the PML-N party said that Sharif will raise the drone issue with the United States.
He told reporters in Lahore that the majority in Pakistan are opposed to the drone strikes and that the campaign should be stopped immediately.
U.S. spy aircraft fired missiles in North Waziristan on Wednesday, killing at least six people including senior Taliban leader Wali-ur-Rehman.
As a protest over the drone strike, the Taliban withdrew their peace talks offer to the new government.
They claimed that the drone strikes are being carried out on the behest of the government. (Xinhua-ANI)
