Beijing, June 1 (Xinhua-ANI): Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak on Saturday announced a government decision to set up a bipartisan special committee to oversee the election commission, in a bid to allay the mounting pressure on the electoral body since the recent general election.
Najib said his government had decided to set up a special committee comprising of parliament members from the ruling coalition and the opposition, according to the state news agency Bernama.
"With the measure, it is hoped that the independence of the election commission will not be questioned anymore and people's trust to the election commission can be strengthened," he was quoted as saying.
Najib urged all quarters not to damage the trustworthiness of the electoral body by making wild allegations out of self-interest.
Najib was speaking at the investiture ceremony in conjunction with the birthday celebration of the Supreme Head of State Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah.
The king has earlier urged the public to accept the results of the general election concluded on May 5, in which the ruling coalition, Barisan Nasional, extended its uninterrupted rule in the country since its independence in 1957.
However, the election commission is under fierce attack by the opposition on alleged electoral fraud including the "phantom voters" and the indelible ink which is said to be easily washed off.
The opposition has organized large rallies around the country calling for fairer elections. (Xinhua-ANI)
