New York, May 30 (ANI): The Mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg has reportedly received threatening letters laced with ricin, a poisonous substance made from castor beans, where the writer expressed his angst at the mayor's stance on gun control.
Members of the New York Police Department's (NYPD) Emergency Services unit who are currently investigating the case along with the FBI were exposed to some portion of the chemical, the New York Post reports.
NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said that the letter had 'references to the debate on gun laws,' adding that the cops who were exposed to ricin were being treated for minor symptoms.
The police also said that National Bioforensic Analysis Center in Maryland tested the pink and orange oily substance from the letters where the preliminary tests showed the presence of ricin.
Aware of the fact that the letter referred to the country's anti-gun efforts, Bloomberg vowed not to step back from his efforts.
Bloomberg had said that the gun attacks are a scourge on the country and needed to be controlled and eliminated.
Letters containing ricin had previously been sent to President Obama, Senator Roger Wicker and a Mississippi judge, Sadie Holland in April this year for which J. Everett Dutschke of Mississipi was arrested after an initial investigation of Paul Kevin Curtis who was discovered to have been set up by an enemy. (ANI)
