Lima, May 23 (IANS) Peruvian President Ollanta Humala and visiting Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper have agreed to strengthen bilateral economic relations.
Speaking to the media, Humala Wednesday said his meeting with Harper was "varied, rich and positive", and that they agreed to strengthen bilateral economic ties, in particular in the mining sector.
"We have exchanged views on the mining extraction activities," Humala said. "We have also talked about the importance of developing infrastructure, about large projects to make the market more dynamic."
The leaders also discussed security issues including the threat posed by drug-trafficking and terrorism, emphasizing the importance of joint work through supranational policies, reported Xinhua.
The Peruvian president announced that Harper had invited him to visit Canada.
On his part, Harper touted Peru for its good policies and governance, calling it a country of great investment opportunities, especially in the mining sector.
Harper arrived in Lima Tuesday night for his first visit to Peru as Canadian prime minister.
Peru and Canada signed a free trade agreement in 2009. Peru is Canada's third largest trading partner among Latin American countries.
