Former Olympic champion Maggi ponders retirement

Brazil,Sports, Tue, 21 May 2013 IANS

Rio de Janeiro, May 21 (IANS) Brazil's former Olympic long jump champion Maurren Maggi has conceded that her dream of competing at the Rio 2016 Games could be over after she failed to qualify for this year's World Championships in Moscow.

The 36-year-old managed a best jump of just 5.92 metres to finish in last place during her final World Championship qualifying event in Sao Paulo Sunday, Xinhua reports.

She blamed a lack of support and insufficient infrastructure in Brazil for her loss of form.

"If I don't have a support structure behind me I will stop before the Rio Games," Maggi said Monday. It doesn't make sense to be racing against time like this."

Maggi, who has been beset by hip problems in the past two years, won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics but failed to make the final at last year's London Games.

The 2013 IAAF World Athletics Championships will be held in Moscow Aug 10-18.
