Indians among 170 illegal expats held in UAE

Dubai, May 20 (IANS) Many Indians are among 170 expatriates rounded up by police in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for breaking residency laws.

Of the 170 arrested, 100 were working illegally as street vendors, 53 violated the law by entering the country illegally, and 17 were found working for employers other than their legal sponsors, local media reported Monday.

The campaign was carried out by Sharjah's General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in different parts of the emirate in collaboration with Sharjah police, bureau of labour, economic department, and Sharjah municipality.

Confirming the campaign, Sharjah Residency and Foreigners Affairs director-general Brigadier Abdullah Ali bin Sahoo said such periodic crackdown and campaigns would continue in the future too to curb the menace of illegal residency.

Bangladeshis, Pakistanis and Nigerians were also among those arrested.
