Indian envoy's chartered jet landing at South Africa base debate moved forward

Johannesburg , Fri, 17 May 2013 ANI

Johannesburg, May 17 (ANI): A Parliamentary debate on the unauthorised landing of a chartered plane at the Waterkloof Air Force Base by Indian High Commissioner in South Africa Virendra Gupta has been moved forward.

The plane was carrying guests for Gupta's niece's wedding. Gupta, however, said that special permission to land a chartered jet at Waterkloof - a national key point - was obtained for security reasons.

According to news 24, the African National Congress said that it would take place on 22 May instead of during the week of 4 to 7 June.

The ANC said it made the proposal in view of the fact that the government's probe into the matter had been concluded.

The aircraft was carrying 270 guests to the wedding of Vega Gupta, 23, and Indian-born Aakash Jahajgarhia at Sun City.

Government faced a storm of criticism over the incident, given the perception that the Gupta brothers are close to President Jacob Zuma, the report added. (ANI)
