London, May 13(ANI): Preaching by extremists and discrimination through segregation at student events has become a widespread trend at many UK universities, a student equality group has claimed.
Radical preachers spoke at nearly 200 events at universities including Cardiff and University College London (UCL) over the last year.
Research found that segregated seating for men and women was promoted or implied at more than a quarter of the events, at 21 separate institutions, despite university rules forbidding it.
Student Rights, set up to tackle the extremism on campuses carried out this research in which it was found out that the university campuses are failing to provide work or study environment free from discrimination or harassment, reports the Daily Express.
Out of the 200 events, 180 had speakers with history of extreme or intolerant views, 46 explicitly promoted segregation by gender and of these six events were subsequently cancelled.
In one such lecture on Islam vs. Atheism, organised by the Islamic Education and Research Academy (IERA), a policy of segregation was given before the event was started, with segregated entrance for men and women and their seating as well.
The Student Rights in their statement said that the discriminatory trend has become a trend in the University campuses in UK and such events with segregation policies are just part of the wider issue. (ANI)
