Singapore, May 9 (IANS) Two Indian-origin leaders have been appointed for the first time to the state executive committee of the Malaysian state of Penang.
Jagdeep Singh Deo, son of Democratic Action party (DAP) chairman Karpal Singh, and P. Ramasamy, also of the same party, were among 10 state executive committee members to be sworn-in at a ceremony Thursday in Penang's capital Georgetown, The Star newspaper reported.
While Ramasamy has been retained as deputy chief minister II, Deo replaced state town and country planning and housing committee chairman Wong Hon Wai.
The swearing-in took place in front of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guang Eng.
The DAP is part of the country's Paktan Rakyat coalition that came to power in Penang and three other states among Malaysia's 13 states after the May 5 general elections.
The Paktan Rakyat sits in opposition to the ruling Barisan Nasional in the national parliament.
