Sydney, Apr.28 (ANI): An Australian politician has accused the government of ignoring the human rights violations taking place in Sri Lanka and focusing more on domestic politics.
Opposition Greens Party leader Christine Milne rebuked Foreign Minister Bob Carr for his insistence on attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Sri Lanka, despite human rights violations by that country, Sydney Morning Herald reports.
Milne described it as hypocritical that the Australian Labour Party has sent asylum seekers back to Sri Lanka, when its government continues to violate human rights. She added that it is offensive that the government still plans to attend the meeting.
While human rights watchdog Amnesty International has confirmed that human rights violations are increasing daily in Sri Lanka, Foreign Minister Carr said that he was not convinced that Sri Lanka was abusing human rights, adding that the country has improved as far as human rights are concerned, and thus boycotting CHOGM would be counter-productive. He said that he believed that engaging with the country would be far more helpful for addressing human rights concerns. (ANI)
