New York, April 28 (ANI): Scores of Sikhs participated in their 26th annual parade here over the weekend, with an aim to spread awareness about Sikhism, the Sikh martial arts and an exhibition of sword dancing during the 'Nagar Kirtan'.
The martial art demonstrations included performing the 'Gatka' with the use of sticks, swords and kirpans.
Members of the united Sikhs of America organised the Nagar Kirtan with the objective of ending bias and motivated incidents of violence against the Sikh community.
The parade included several floats which followed one carrying the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scriptures of the Sikhs.
Sikhs gathered in large numbers and distributed free vegetarian food through the community kitchen or "Langar".
Sikh community member Arshi said the parade showcased crucial aspects of their religion and helped in creating awareness.
Band members were visible performing in coordinated manner as they marched as a part of the Sikh parade.
The parade started form Madison Avenue at 39th Street and ended at 24th Street at Madison Avenue Park.
The Annual NYC Sikh Parade Manhattan is a Vaisakhi Day celebration and takes place in the month of April corresponding to the Nanakshahi Calendar month of Vaisakh. (ANI)
