Scotland's largest gurdwara set to open Sunday

London, April 25 (IANS) Built with contributions from members of the Sikh community, Scotland's largest gurdwara is set to open April 28 in Glasgow.

The four million-pound Sikh spiritual home has been designed on the lines of Amritsar's Golden Temple, the Sikhs' holiest shrine, local media reported.

The gold-domed structure has all the facilities of a traditional gurdwara - a large prayer hall, an education centre and a food hall for langars.

The Glasgow Gurdwara, located at Albert Drive, Pollokshields area of the city, is expected to attract over 1,000 visitors each week and become a city landmark.

"The construction and opening of this gurdwara is perhaps the biggest step taken since the initial decision by my forefathers to settle in Scotland," the Scottish Daily Record quoted Glasgow Gurdwara president Surinder Singh as saying ahead of Sunday's opening ceremony.

"This will provide Sikhs with a special and sacred place that allows us to practise our faith, come together and learn."

Members of the Sikh community have contributed freely with open hearts to turn their dream into reality, some even with six figure sums.

Sunday's opening ceremony will start with a procession from the old gurdwara to Pollokshields and will end with a fireworks display in the evening.

There are around 10,000 Sikhs in Scotland.
