NSW technology improving lives of hearing impaired children in India

New Delhi , Wed, 24 Apr 2013 ANI

New Delhi, April 24 (ANI): The Deputy Premier of New South Wales, Andrew Stoner, was in Mumbai on Thursday (April 18) to announce a New South Wales Government grant of 110,000 Australian dollars for the Aural Education for the Hearing Impaired (AURED) centre.

The grant will support 10 children to receive revolutionary hearing implants from Sydney-based Cochlear and associated therapy, allowing these children to hear for the first time and develop spoken language.

Mr.Stoner said the Australian technology was making a major impact in the lives of children in India.

"For more than 30 years, Cochlear has been making a difference to the lives of hearing impaired people around the world by providing life-changing hearing solutions," he said.

"Cochlear is not only a leading technology company in New South Wales and a leading exporter, the company is to be commended for its support of worthwhile organisations such as AURED.

"It was truly inspiring to meet with a group of hearing impaired Indian children whose lives have been transformed through technology developed by a world-leading New South Wales company.

"I am also pleased to announce the New South Wales Government will be able to support the AURED centre with funding for 10 more children to receive Cochlear implants."

Mr. Stoner said the company employs about 2,500 people worldwide, has a direct presence in more than 20 countries and sells its products into another 100 countries.

"Cochlear is planning to invest further in the Indian market through direct operations and to build awareness of hearing-related disease through education and campaigning among medical professionals," he said.

"AURED currently has about 500 Cochlear implant students from about 90 different cities in India. Over 80 per cent of students are taught free or on a sliding pay scale." (ANI)
