Massive cyber-espionage in China: Report

Washington , Tue, 23 Apr 2013 ANI

Washington, Apr.23 (ANI): Government and industry investigators have revealed that in a total of 120 incidents, 96 percent of global cyber-espionage is categorized under China, according to the 2013 Data Breach Investigations Report.

The hackers linked to the Chinese Government are the most successful and energetic cyber spies in the world in 2012, the Washington Post reports.

Verizon's RISK team and U.S. officials along with several foreign governments have analyzed several documented data and found that hundreds of them have been breached, the most effective and quantitative breaches being state-affiliated cyber-espionage of intellectual property, the Washington Post reports.

The report said that the Chinese hackers have targeted transportation, manufacturing and professional services for their data.

The managing principal for the RISK team, Wade Baker has said that this statistic is shocking and it will need much work by the team to search these cyber offenders.

The report by Verizon has been the first to reveal government-affiliated cyber-espionage since 2008 and also speaks volumes on the increasing level and numbers of such crimes and sophisticated ways of determining their origins.

Meanwhile, Chinese government officials have maintained that their government is not linked with cyber-espionage and the intrusions that apparently come from their internet addresses belong elsewhere.

Both the Verizon report and findings by National Intelligence Estimate have declared China as an increasing threat in cyberspace.

The head of cyber security investigations for the FBI, Shawn Henry has said that there are dozens of other countries involved in cyber crimes.

The Verizon report has identified 44 million compromised records from 621 confirmed data breaches in 2012, of which 19 percent were the results of government-affiliated espionage. With the hackers based in Romania, the United States, Bulgaria or Russia, retail institutions have been the most commonly targeted areas for data breaches.

Verizon officials have asserted that their report is not only based on tracking a malicious code to its origin, but also searches that label China as the source of intrusion. (ANI)
