Sydney, Apr. 19 (ANI): A students' guild of an Australian University has apologized for racist jokes published in its satirical PROSH newspaper.
The University of Western Australia's students' apology was too late for one indigenous education group, which has decided to end its association with the guild.
According to WA News, the 'Dream Time Horoscopes' included a series of jokes targeted at indigenous people and was met with public outrage on social media.
References made in the page included remarks about sniffing petrol, drinking Emu Export, aimlessly protesting and receiving disproportional bonuses from the government.
The PROSH newspaper, printed annually, is written and published by UWA students to raise money for four charities.
The Indigenous Communities Education and Awareness Foundation is one of the benefactors of PROSH, but has said it would discontinue its association and sponsorship arrangement with the UWA Guild for the rest of the year, the report said.
ICEA founder and CEO Lockie Cooke said ICEA could not accept any funding from any organisation which made disparaging or racist comments about indigenous Australians.
Cooke said it went against the work that ICEA, a foundation that promotes reconciliation through youth education, does in the community.
Following the uproar on social media and within the community, the Guild issued an apology. (ANI)
