The 'C' words that bosses like to hear

Melbourne, Tue, 16 Apr 2013 ANI

Melbourne, Apr 16 (ANI): When it comes to using certain words around the boss, there are some that should be avoided at all costs and others that we all need to be using a lot more of.

But according to one survey, workers are not only failing to use the C words enough but also proving they have the skills to match.

The American Management Association survey found managers were after workers who could walk the talk when it came to four key areas - critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity, News.com.au reported.

However, of the nearly 770 managers surveyed, more than half reported their staff were just average in these areas and needed to up the ante in order to get ahead and get noticed.

More than three quarters of those questioned also said these were the skills workers needed to be able to "keep up with the fast pace of change in business in order to compete on a global level" and are more interested that workers can show they can use these skills rather than just knowing what they mean.

The same number also said they believed these skills would become even more important in the next three to five years.

Executives also reported they believed younger workers, rather than older ones, would be more likely to have these skills as universities and other training institutions kept pace with the global skills demand.

But it seems the C word skills aren't the only things workers need to get ahead.

Australian author and Forbes columnist Margie Warrell also reckons workers need to learn to take more risks and stop playing it safe at work to get noticed and progress up the corporate ladder. (ANI)
