Johannesburg, Apr 7 (ANI): Six world powers failed to come to an agreement with Iran on an approach to reducing fears that Tehran might use its nuclear technology to make weapons, according to European Union's (EU) foreign policy chief.
Declaring that the two sides were 'far apart on substance', EU's head of foreign policy Catherine Ashton said that although there were expectations that the negotiations were making progress, the two sides had failed to make enough headway to qualify the meeting as a success at the end of the two-day talks, News24 reports.
Although Ashton said that the negotiators will now consult with their capitals, the report noted that she had made no mention of plans for a new meeting, adding that it was another sign that the gap dividing the two sides remains substantial.
According to the report, the six countries insisted that Iran cut back on its highest grade uranium enrichment production and stockpile due to fears that Tehran will divert it from making nuclear fuel to form the material used in the core of nuclear warhead.
However, the report further said, Iran disagreed with the negotiations as it wants greater rewards for any concessions that the six are ready to give, like an end to international penalties crippling its oil trade and financial transactions. (ANI)
