Four Italian journalists held in Syria: FM

Rome , Sat, 06 Apr 2013 ANI

Rome, April 6 (Xinhua-ANI): Four Italian journalists have been held in northern Syria near the Turkish border, Italy's Foreign Ministry said early on Saturday.

The ministry stressed the need of "utmost discretion" saying the families were informed and a crisis unit was formed to handle the case looking at journalists' safety as the priority.

According to sources quoted by ANSA news agency, the four were in good health conditions. "They were being held, and not kidnapped," the source said adding they "will be released soon" and return to Italy in the next few days.

The journalists were part of a crew working on a history report for the Rai state television.

They had entered the rebel-controlled Syria from Antioch on Tuesday, and were scheduled to go back every night to Turkish territory thus remain close to the border between the two countries. (Xinhua-ANI)
