Berlin, April 6 (IANS) Hoffenheim overcame Dusseldorf 3-0 to earn three points in their relegation battle in German Bundesliga football.
Hoffenheim wrapped up their sixth victory in the 28th match of the season to ensure a winning start for their new coach Markus Gisdol Friday, Xinhua reports.
The goal scorers were Roberto Firminio, Kevin Volland besides an own goal by Dusseldorf's Andreas Lambertz.
The hosts staged a powerful opening period against newly promoted visitors from Dusseldorf and broke the deadlock through a clinical counter-attack in the 11th minute.
Hoffenheim's Sven Schipplock and Roberto Firminio exchanged passes before Firminio unleashed a right-footed hammer from 13 meters into the roof the net.
Dusseldorf responded to the lead but Leon Balogun nor Alex Bellinghausern were able to utilize their chances.
With beginning of the second half, the Dusseldorf's goalkeeper Fabian Giefer denied Schipplock to double the lead from 16 meters.
Dusseldorf continued to build up chances through Dani Schahin, Andreas Lambertz and Robbie cruse but yet goals were scored at the other end of the pitch.
Dusseldorf's Lambertz cleared a corner by Hoffenheim's Sejad Salihovic into his own goal to double the lead for the hosts 15 minutes before the final whistle.
The 2-0 deficit took the wind out of Dusseldorf's sails as Hoffenheim's Volland tripled the lead in the dying minutes of the match.
Hoffenheim have 23 points, one point away from 16th placed Augsburg and a relegation play-off spot. Dusseldorf remain on 15th position with 29 points.
The following matches are scheduled for Saturday: Defending champions Dortmund face Augsburg, Monchengladbach see last positioned Greuther Fuerth, third positioned Leverkusen meet Wolfsburg, Bremen host Schalke, Hamburg encounter Freiburg and front runners Bayern clash Frankfurt.
